Hong Kong Shopping

Jan 14 , 2011

From the latest fashions right off of the catwalk to hand-made crafts at the market, Hong Kong shopping has plenty of gifts for you to bring home.

For all the great things to do and see in Hong Kong, shopping ranks as one of the best. Hong Kong's existence is built on trade; it served as a middleman for other Asian countries for much of its existence. Today, Hong Kong has come into its own, and is now a financial hub as well. And if you're visiting Hong Kong, you shouldn't pass on the great shopping opportunities found here. Whether you're interested in simple souvenirs or taking home an entire new custom wardrobe, you're sure to find something you like.

Luxury Goods

First and foremost, Hong Kong is known for its luxury goods. Many famous luxury designers have established flagship stores here, selling clothing, accessories, and other top-end items. If you're visiting and you get a chance to buy an item you probably wouldn't find elsewhere, you might as well buy it! Hong Kong has also become a second home for the hottest in Japanese fashions, and top young designers and brands from its neighbors have set up shop here as well.

Street Markets

If you're looking for something more affordable, head to one of Hong Kong's many street markets. You'll be able to find pretty much everything under the sun, with items ranging from casual clothes to music. These Hong Kong shopping markets also offer food and entertainment, making them a great spectacle with local flavor. We recommend you check out Temple Street, which is probably Hong Kong's most famous street market. Other good choices include the Lady's Street or Jardine's Crescent in the highly developed Causeway Bay.

Custom-made Products

Hong Kong is famous worldwide for its custom tailors. Tourists and business travelers alike come far and wide to get suits and dresses made specifically to their tastes and needs. The best part is that these items also cost consumers far less than similar quality from brands available in America. You'd be making a mistake if you left Hong Kong without something new to wear to work or your next party.

Once you have your new, made-to-order clothing, you're probably going to want some new jewelry to go with it. You're in luck, as Hong Kong is one of the world's largest exporters of jewelry. The main products here are gold and jade, and you can find vendors all over.

Antiques

Finally, don't miss Hollywood Road. There are all kinds of antique stores here, with goods of all kinds and prices. The historic artifacts available here are top-notch and date back to the Ming Dynasty, but be prepared for steep prices on the most desirable items. And while you're there, take a break from your Hong Kong shopping to soak in some history and culture at the nearby Man Mo Temple, the oldest temple in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's shopping is some of the best in the world, and this island takes it seriously. While you're here, grab a map and head out for a shopping adventure.
